Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73540

This specimen was lot 73540 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Pfennig, 1762-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-62 Brown. This example offers lustrous burnt umber surfaces with small mottled areas of raw umber or darker hues. Some slight flatness on the obverse, otherwise strong lettering and design features. Attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1739-62 and has a modest catalog value. A few were struck in gold for presentation. Another pfenning exists (KM 891) with the leaping stallion reverse but no mintmaster's initials. It is also inexpensive. The denomination is spelled "pfennig" in modern German.
