Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1763-IAP 24 mariengroschen KM-870
This specimen was lot 73529 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1763-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS EF-45. A well-executed example of this popular type with pleasing lilac-gray surfaces. Problem free with only light wear; attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. A 24 mariengroschen with a leaping stallion reverse (KM 895) was struck 1736-80 and is slightly more expensive. Twenty-four mariengroschen started out as two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of Karl's reign. Mintmaster IAP appears 1763-73.
