SB923-74514r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74514 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1763-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, UNC Details. A truly attractive example of this minor, despite the light cleaning. The obverse detail is excellent, and the coin exhibits generous amounts of golden highlights with subtle splashes of russet and cobalt. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Six mariengroschen made a quarter gulden, which was originally one sixth of a thaler but had slipped to one ninth thaler by the end of the reign. Mintmaster IAP appears 1763-72.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-872; Welter-2752.
