This specimen was lot 73237 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1679. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS AU-55. Very minimally handled and offering a great tone, this wholesome minor--despite its smaller planchet size--still yields a wildman depiction with charming character. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This issue of 1668-84 introduced the twelve mariengroschen denomination in this state. Equal to one-third thaler, it was struck steadily until 1789. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The wild man is the only design used. The leaping stallion reverse appeared on the one-third thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
