Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1678 4 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73240 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 4 Mariengroschen, 1678. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS MS-62. Tantalizingly toned, this nearly-Choice minor presents a well defined wildman and a melange of iridescence surrounding him. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This issue of 1675-83 was the second four mariengroschen denomination in this state. Equal to one-ninth thaler, it was struck steadily until 1789. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The wild man is the most common design but a few were issued with the leaping stallion reverse (KM 652, 861, 894, 1006).
