Künker sale 263, lot 759

This specimen was lot 759 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$10,980 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Reichstaler 1676, Zellerfeld, auf den Tod seiner Stiefmutter Elisabeth Sophie, Tochter des Herzogs Johann Albrecht II. von Mecklenburg-Güstrow. Von größter Seltenheit. Kl. Stiftsloch und kl. Sammlerpunze im Rand, sehr schön. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Rudolf August, 1666-85, thaler of 1676, Zellerfeld mint, on the death of his stepmother Elisabeth Sophie, daughter of the Duke John Albrecht II of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. Of the greatest rarity, tiny pinhole and punch mark in the edge, very fine.)"

The SCWC states that this was issued on the death of the duke's wife, not his stepmother. Let us assume the old duke's wife was intended; we were not there at the time.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-524; Dav-6377; Welter 859.
