Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1675 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74619 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1675. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS MS-62. Mostly argent throughout, this charming, nearly-Choice specimen presents some golden-olive toning nearer the peripheries, all while retaining some luster residing in the fields. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from P. N. Schulten." This type was struck 1668-84 and is uncommon. Twelve mariengroschen made one third of a thaler or half a gulden. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The equivalent one-third thaler with the leaping stallion reverse did not appear until 1693.
