Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1671 thaler Dav-6383
The first specimen was lot 619 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Taler, 1671. Rudolf August (1666-1704). NGC MS-64. Well struck on lustrous metal, with nearly every hair of bust defined. With hardly any contact marks which is surprising given the large amount of open space in the design. Old envelope toning with amber and blue highlights near periphery. Exceptional quality. From the Rockaway Collection." The second specimen was lot 4137 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$2,339 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Reichstaler 1671, Clausthal, auf die Eroberung der Stadt Braunschweig. Vorzüglich +. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 34, Osnabrück 1996, Nr. 2910 und der Slg. Friedrich Popken, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 308, Osnabrück 2018, Nr. 2113. (duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Rudolf Augustus, 1666-85, thaler of 1671, Clausthal mint, on the homage of the city of Brunswick. Extremely fine or better.)"
This type of 1671, struck in several variations, is not as common as "wild man" thalers such as Dav-6343 but it is not rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver. The second specimen is 28,97 g.
Catalog reference: KM 513.1, Dav-6383. The second specimen is Dav-6383C; Welter 1837.
