Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1671 thaler Dav-6384
This specimen was lot 533 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, HERZOGTUM Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Reichstaler 1671, Clausthal, auf die Eroberung der Stadt Braunschweig. Feine Patina, min. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, vorzüglich. (duchies of Brunswick-Luneburg and Brunswick Wolfenbuttel, Rudolf Augustus, 1666-85, thaler of 1671, Clausthal mint, on the conquest of the city of Brunswick. Fine patina, small edge crack, extremely fine.)"
The duke thought this success was worth commemorating with four different thalers (Dav-6381, -6382, -6383 and -6384), all scarce to rare.
