Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1671 thaler Dav-6385
This specimen was lot 5479 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$ including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Reichstaler 1671, Clausthal, auf die Eroberung der Stadt Braunschweig. Prachtexemplar mit hübscher Patina. Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 6, Osnabrück 1987, Nr. 595. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Rudolf August, 1666-85, thaler of 1671, Clausthal mint, on the capture of the city of Braunschweig. Choice example with handsome patina, extremely fine.)"
The duke also struck Dav-6381, -6382, Dav-6383 and Dav-6384, all variations on the same design. The dynasty had been attempting to take the city for nearly two centuries and finally succeeded in 1671.
