Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1671 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74471 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1671. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS Genuine--Spot Removed, Unc Details. The noted spot removal occurs to the left of the wildman. Otherwise, this minor stands without any evidence of handling, and also presents a pleasing level of toning. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Peus 306, Lot # 1792 (with ticket)." The twelve mariengroschen was one-third thaler, not two-thirds as stated by the auctioneers. This type was struck 1668-84.
