Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73238

This specimen was lot 73238 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen, 1668. Zellerfeld Mint. Rudolph August. PCGS Genuine--Bent, AU Details. Despite its somewhat bent nature, this pleasingly toned and lightly handled minor retains solid detail throughout. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This issue of 1668 and 1671-78 introduced the six mariengroschen denomination in this state. Equal to one-sixth thaler, it was struck steadily until 1788. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The wild man is the most common design but a few were issued with the leaping stallion reverse (KM 578, 606, 622).
