Sincona Auction 103, lot 222

This specimen was lot 222 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 14,000 CHF (about US$21,336 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum. Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Löser zu 3 Taler 1676, Zellerfeld. Auf den Tod seines Neffen August Friedrich. Ohne Wertpunze. Brustbild Friedrich Augusts fast von vorn, von Palm- und Lorbeerzweig umgeben, darüber halten zwei Engel einen Helm, unten Waffen und Fahnen. Rv. 22 Zeilen Schrift. Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. Tuschreste. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Rudolf Augustus, 1666-85, triple thaler of 1676, Zellerfeld mint, on the death of August Frederick, the duke's nephew, without value punched in. Obverse: facing bust of the prince, palm and laurel branches around; above, two angels support a helmet; below, weapons and banner; reverse: 22 line inscription. Extremely rare, Extremely Fine, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina, Ink number.)"

The prince was killed in battle at Philippsburg in 1676, aged 19 years. Death came early and often to the duke's family.
