This specimen was lot 73486 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1678. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Rudolph August. PCGS AU-53. This coin exhibits a strongly detailed and well-struck Wild Man on argent surfaces with splashes of darker toning in protected areas. The muscular anatomy and details in the headgear, face, and skirt are only tempered by the light wear that comes with the grade. Truly engaging. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1668-84 and is uncommon. Twelve mariengroschen made one third of a thaler or half a gulden. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The equivalent one-third thaler with the leaping stallion reverse did not appear until 1693.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-504; Welter-1848.
