Künker sale 400, lot 16

This specimen was lot 16 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €95,000 (about US$123,244 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBUTTEL, Rudolf August, 1666-1685. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1679, Zellerfeld. Mit Wertpunze; Münzmeister Rudolf Bornemann. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//Die Stadtansichten von Braunschweig und Wolfenbüttel übereinander, oben eine Galeere auf See unter dem strahlenden Namen Jehovas, unten die geteilte Jahreszahl · 16 - 79 ·, dazwischen die eingepunzte Wertzahl. Von größter Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar mit ausdrucksvoller Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Hess/Leu 18, Luzern 1961, Nr. 55, der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 343, Frankfurt/Main 1995, Nr. 1491 und der Preussag Collection, Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 107. Obverse: armored and mantled bust; reverse: the city views of Brunswick and Wolfenbüttel one above the other, above a galley at sea under the radiant name of Jehovah, below the divided date · 16 - 79 ·, in between the punched value. Extremely rare, magnificent specimen with superb patina, extremely fine.)"

Another triple thaler of 1679 has a circle around the duke's bust (KM 532/Dav-LS101).
