Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1682 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73487 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1682. Zellerfeld Mint; mm: three stars. Rudolph August. PCGS AU-58. This coin exhibits warm, champagne-infused argent surfaces with deeper shades nearing gold in the protected areas. Very well struck with a well-rendered Wild Man. Attractive. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1668-84 and is uncommon. Twelve mariengroschen made one third of a thaler or half a gulden. No mintmaster appears on this coin. The equivalent one-third thaler with the leaping stallion reverse did not appear until 1693.
