Künker sale 406, lot 3865

This specimen was lot 3865 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,841 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Josef II. 1765-1790. Dukat 1764, Wien. Königsdukat. Variante mit BOH · & · PRINC in der Rückseitenumschrift. GOLD. RR Winz. Probierspur am Rand, leicht justiert, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Joseph II, 1765-90, ducat of 1764, Vienna mint, variety with "BOH · & · PRINC" in the reverse legend. Very rare, some tooling on the edge, lightly adjusted, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1764 only and only at Vienna. The SCWC gives it a premium but does not label it as rare. The reverse was used again on a ducat of 1765 (KM 1844) but was paired with a draped and armored bust of Joseph II.
