Austria 1752-HA 17 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 195 in Künker Auction 423 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €130 (about US$184 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HABSBURGISCHE ERBLANDE-ÖSTERREICH · RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Franz I., 1745-1765. 17 Kreuzer 1752 H-A, Hall. (Holy Roman Empire, Francis I, 1745-65, seventeen kreuzer of 1752, Hall mint. Obverse: armored, mantled and laureate bust with Order chain; reverse: crowned and nimbate double-headed eagle with sword and scepter in its claws, supporting the impaled arms of Lorraine and Tuscany, mintmark below. Extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1751-65 at Karlsburg (mintmark "CA"), Graz (mintmark "GR"), Kremnitz (mintmark "KB"), Prague (mintmark "PR"), Vienna (mintmark "WI"), Nagybanya (mintmark "NB") and Hall (shown here). We remain baffled as to why a seventeen kreuzer was struck instead of a fifteen kreuzer or an eighteen kreuzer (one quarter gulden or one eighth thaler). These denominations and the use of a unified design were introduced with the convention thaler of 120 kreuzer.
Recorded mintage: 703,000.
Specification: 6.12 g, 0.542 fine silver, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 6,08 g.
