Hungary 1761-KB 17 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 4037 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$144 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780 17 Kreuzer 1761. Kremnitz. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, seventeen kreuzer of 1761, Kremnitz mint. Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"
We don't know what prompted the issue of this denomination, which competed with contemporary ten, fifteen and twenty kreuzer, but various types were issued 1751-65 from Vienna, Prague, Nagybanya, Kremnitz (shown here), Karlsburg, Hall and Graz. The issues of Nagybanya and Kremnitz show this Madonna reverse distinctive to Hungary. This date is common.
Recorded mintage: 1,765,000.
Specification: 6.12 g, .542 fine silver, .106 troy oz ASW; this specimen is 6.11 g.
