Jean Elsen sale 165, lot 1201
JE165-1201r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1201 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €130 (about US$179 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SAINT EMPIRE, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AR Siebzehner (17 Kreuzer), 1751, Hall. Pour le Tyrol. D/ B. diadémé, dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Aigle impériale éployée et couronnée. Rare. presque Très Beau. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, silver seventeen kreuzer of 1751, Hall mint, struck for Tyrol. Obverse: armored and diademed bust right; reverse: crowned imperial eagle displayed. Rare, about Very Fine.)"

This denomination was also struck with the empress's bust at Vienna (KM 1782) and Graz (KM 1795). Francis I appeared on seventeen kreuzer from Hall, Nagybanya, Vienna, Carlsburg, Graz, Prague and Kremnitz (KM 2026.1). The weight was slightly reduced in 1753 and struck in this form until 1763. We remain baffled as to why a seventeen kreuzer was struck instead of a fifteen kreuzer or an eighteen kreuzer (one quarter gulden or one eighth thaler).

Recorded mintage: 139,000.

Specification: 6.12 g, 0.562 fine silver, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 6,02 g.

Catalog reference: KM 1796, M.T. 1049; Her. 1039.
