Stack's Bowers 2025 NYINC sale, lot 34178
SB125-34178r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34178 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Empire. Franc, 1813-T. Nantes Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS MS-64. Surpassed in the PCGS census by just a single example, this resounding near-Gem comes alive through a pale gray hue that deepens slightly nearer the peripheries. No doubt a tremendous opportunity for a coin with great character. From the Richard Margolis Collection." In 1806 the French revolutionary calendar was dropped and normal AD dating resumed. The reverse was revised in 1809 from REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE to EMPIRE FRANÇAISE and struck in this style thru 1814. This date from the Nantes mint is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 19,815[2].

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: KM-692.14; Gad-447; F-205/69.
