This specimen was lot 33716 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV gold Louis d'Or 1702-S MS61 PCGS, Reims mint. Overstruck on a 1696-A Louis d'Or of the same monarch. One of only two certified examples of this elusive mint certified by PCGS, and the first we have handled, Louis's of the period rarely reaching Mint State." This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The louis d'or aux 8 L, struck 1700-04, was succeeded by the louis d'or aux insignes struck 1704-09. Droulers[2] gives this date from the Reims mint some premium over the common date (1701-A) but none are cheap.

Recorded mintage: 10,424 on new blanks plus more "reformed"[2].

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, 24-26 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 414, Fr-436; KM 334.18, Gad-253.
