Sincona sale 78, lot 307

This specimen was lot 307 in Sincona sale 78 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,157 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA | Russian Empire and Federation | Catherine II. 1762-1796, 2 Kopecks 1766, Suzun Mint. 35 roubles according to Petrov. 8 roubles according to Ilyin. Fine. Usual flan flaws." This type was struck 1767-80 for circulation in Siberia along with copper five and ten kopeks. This early date lacks a mintmark and may be a pattern. Many survive today but few in choice condition. On this type, two martens support a shield with the date and value.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a rare date.

Specification: 13.1 g, copper, this specimen 13.52 g.

Catalog reference: KM C4, Bitkin 1094 (R2).
