Russia 1766-SP 10 rubles Fr-129a
The first specimen was lot 998 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $10,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Catherine II, 1762-1796. 10 Rubles, 1766 CΠБ. Narrow crowned bust r. Rv. Cruciform shields, tiny imperial eagle at center. Bold strike. Choice Very Fine." The second specimen was lot 4329 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description [2] noted, "Russia. 10 Rubles, 1766-SPB. Catherine II, The Great, 1762-1796. Bust right. Mint mark, lower under bust. Reverse: Cross of four shields. Considerable amount of luster remaining. NGC graded EF-40." This type was struck 1766-76 and superseded the ten rubles of the Czarina Elizabeth which were 16.59 grams.
