Künker sale 353, lot 3944

This specimen was lot 3944 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$766 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. 2/3 Taler 1796, Berlin. Handelsmünze, geprägt für das Bankhaus Oppenheim. Mit FRIEDR WILH KOENIG V PR am Anfang der Vorderseitenumschrift und mit Lorbeerzweigen zu den Seiten des Wappens. Fast vorzüglich. Erworben im Oktober 1969. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William II, 1786-97, two-thirds thaler of 1796, Berlin mint, struck for the Oppenheim Bank, with "FRIEDR WILH KOENIG V PR" at the start of the obverse legend and laurel branches to the sides of the coat of arms. About extremely fine.)"

This type of 1796-97 was the first issue of a gulden since the 1740's. It seems to have been struck at the request of a bank altho the circumstances are obscure. Several varieties exist but the denomination was once again abandoned. The gulden was two-thirds of a reichs thaler or half a convention thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 17.32 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 17,22 g.

Catalog reference: KM 363, J. 186; Olding 59.
