This specimen was lot 31491 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $5,280. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm II gold Frederick d'Or 1796-A MS63 NGC, Berlin mint. A wholly natural example of this type that is often found well-worn, the fields are highly reflective to the point of giving it a prooflike appearance. As best we can tell, only one other Mint State certified examples has appeared on the market in at least the past decade, and that was an MS64 that sold in Switzerland in 2015 for a little under $6,000." This type was struck in Berlin and Breslau 1786-97 and is the only friedrichs d'or of this ruler. These coins saw hard use and are frequently found heavily worn.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.68 g, 0.903 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 349.
