from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 43108
SB824-43108r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43108 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. Constitution. Copper 2 Sols Token, Year IV/1792. Lyon Mint. PCGS MS-63 Brown. Coarse edge. By Clémanson & Cie. Standing as one of the finest and heaviest examples of the type seen by Margolis, this token issue presents deep brown surfaces with some scattered hints of red throughout. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Phil Keller on 22 March 1995). Ex: Virgil M. Brand Collection (as "Ferrari-Brand," Schulman - ca. 1932) Lot # 3129. Ex: Baron Phillipe de Ferrari la Renotière Collection. Ex: O. P. Eklund Collection."

Clemanson and Co. seem to have been competitors to the better known Monneron Freres. They had struck copper two sols. A variety (KM Tn7) exists without the flags behind the fasces.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, this specimen 15.09 g.

Catalog reference: KM Tn8, Maz-127 (R3).
