Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 396

This specimen was lot 396 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,200 € (about US$1,568 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1837. Isabel II. Madrid. DG (Departamento of Grabado (Engraving Department)). 2 maravedis. Graded by NGC as MS65 BN, no. 5935278-017, as Segovia. Nice. Original luster. Very rare. S/C [uncirculated]. Ex Elariz Collection." Altho this is a product of the Madrid mint, this rare issue is not marked with the Madrid mintmark, being more of a pattern. Similar coins marked "DG" include an 1835 8 maravedis and an 1836 4 maravedis. The Madrid mint was not used for copper at this time, that being the task of Jubia and Segovia.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper, 3.02 g, 18.5-19.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16557, KM 532.3, AC-48.
