The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Cuba|CUBA]], Havana mint, gold proof 10 pesos, 1989, José Martí, NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (EMO Collection Label), "top pop." KM-211; Fr-24. Superb mirror cameo with the faintest rub on Martí's brow, tied with two others for finest in the NGC census, from a reported mintage of just 15 pieces. Pedigreed to The Emilio M. Ortiz Collection of Cuban Gold Coins." Martí, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia. This design was also used in 1988 and 1990.
