Aureo sale 269, lot 664

This specimen was lot 664 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,273 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"* 1993. Cuba. 500 pesos. AU. 40º Aniversario del Moncada. Proof. (Cuba, gold five hundred pesos of 1993, for the fortieth anniversary of the Moncada rebellion, proof.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC but without a photo. Desperate for foreign exchange, Cuba has issued large numbers of NCLT's, many only vaguely related to Cuba. This type was also struck in platinum (KM 605) and 1 oz gold (KM 537, 100 pesos).

Recorded mintage: unknown, all proof.

Specification: 155.52 g, .999 fine gold, this specimen 156,53 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-79a, KM 917.
