Künker sale 264, lot 3608

This specimen was lot 3608 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$25,836 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Maximilian II. 1848-1864. Vereinskrone 1863. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Nur sehr wenige Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Slg. Vogel, Teil 2, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 213, Osnabrück 2012, Nr. 4633. (kingdom of Bavaria, Maximilian II, 1848-64, gold union crown of 1863. Very rare, only a few struck, extremely fine to uncirculated. From Kunker sale 213, lot 4633.)"

In 1856, the ducat was dropped in favor of this gold krone issued 1857-64. The krone was also minted by Austria (KM 2253), Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Prussia (Fr-2437) and Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (Fr-750) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. The krone was dropped in favor of the gold twenty mark after unification in 1871.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very few.
