Bavaria 1864 pfenning
This specimen was lot 6061 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,427 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH, Maximilian II. 1848-1864. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des Ku.-Pfennigs 1864. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild zwischen Eichenzweigen//Wert und Jahresangabe. Rand glatt. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Feine Goldtönung, fast Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Sammlung Coenen. Exemplar der Slg. Bayern und das Haus Wittelsbach, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 108, Osnabrück 2006, Nr. 683 und der Sammlung König Farouk von Ägypten, Auktion Sotheby + Co. Kairo 1954, Nr. 713. (kingdom of Bavaria, Maximilian II, 1848-64, one pfennig of 1864 struck in gold. Obverse: crowned quartered arms with escutcheon, oak wreath around; reverse: date and value. Plain edge. Extremely rare, fine gold toning, about uncirculated.)"
The regular copper pfenning was struck in substantial quantities 1858-71 and is common. This gold off-metal strike may be unique.
