Bavaria (1864) goldgulden Fr-294
This specimen was lot 1797 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,322 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, KONIGREICH, Ludwig II. 1864-1886. Goldgulden o. J. (1864). Neujahrsgoldgulden. Präsent der Stadt Würzburg. Mit geripptem Rand. GOLD. R Winz. Henkelspur, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Bavaria, undated goldgulden, for the New Year, presented by the city of Würzburg, with reeded edge. Rare, small mount mark, very fine to extremely fine.)"
This type is not listed in the regular SCWC. It was used for the payment of a traditional tribute to the duke of Franconia, a title held by the king of Bavaria after the annexation of Würzburg. It lies on the borderline between coin and medal. Wurzburg had been annexed to Bavaria more than a half century before.
