Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73556
SB1123-73556r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73556 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. 12 Mariengroschen, 1698. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS AU-58. A lovely example of this type with lilac gray surfaces awash in champagne and golden-hued toning. Well-struck, attractive, and desirable. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1693-98 after Ernst August was promoted from duke to elector, is rather scarce. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England. Confusingly, the photo in the SCWC shows an issue of Georg Ludwig.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-377; Welter-1998.
