SB1123-73552r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73552 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Calenberg. Taler, 1698-RB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ernst August. PCGS AU-50. This coin offers pale lilac gray surfaces with a mix of gold and russet highlights in protected areas and the occasional glimpse of cobalt. Evenly struck with light wear. A solid and attractive example of the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type, struck 1697-98 after Ernst August was promoted from duke to elector, is rather scarce. Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg and Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle were traded back and forth between brothers until death left only one, who became the elector of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover ("Hannover" for short) and later king of England.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-6601; KM-382.5; Welter-1955.
