Mexico 1873-CH M peso

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24404

Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of Mexico's silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This specimen was lot 24404 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1873-CHM. NGC MS-62. Sharply struck with soft satin luster and good eye appeal. From the Alex Siegel Collection." This issue from Chihuahua is somewhat scarce. Other mints include Culiacan (scarce), Guadalajara (scarce), Mexico City (common), Oaxaca (scarce), Durango (slightly scarce), Guanajuato (common), Zacatecas (common) and Potosi (slightly scarce).

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Recorded mintage: 320,000 (including overassayer M/P).
