French ten franc pieces 1850-1914 are gold. Pieces issued during 1928-38 are silver and those from the forties and fifties are base metal.

The Fifth Republic was established in 1958, accompanied by a monetary reform. 10 new francs = 1000 old francs. The ten franc pieces issued 1965-75 are silver and were hoarded--they are rarely found circulated.
