Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1341

This specimen was lot 1341 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €550 (about US$784 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 10 francs, 1854A, Paris. Petit module. Tranche cannelée. Rare. Superbe. (empire of France, Napoleon III, 1852-70, gold ten francs of 1854, Paris mint, small module, reeded edge. Rare, Extremely Fine.)"

This type, struck 1854-55 only, was superseded in the middle of 1855 by a coin of 19 mm diameter. The ten francs d'or is, as a class, much scarcer than the contemporary twenty francs d'or. It is especially rare to find in nice condition.

Recorded mintage: 2,559,012 plus 1,357,705 of the plain edge.

Specification: 3.23 g, 0.900 fine gold, 17 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: F.505A/1, Gad-1013; Fr-576.
