France 1854-A 10 centimes KM-M26
This specimen was lot 42808 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 10 Centimes, 1854. Paris Mint. PCGS SP-64+ BN Gold Shield. Struck to commemorate Napoleon III visit to the Paris mint. Exceptionally attractive for the type with enchanting gleam in the fields and pale blue and pink tone over the brown surfaces. Worthy of a strong bid." The regime of Napoleon III finally carried out plans developed during the 1840's to melt down and remint all the old copper circulating in France, some of it dating back to before the Revolution of 1789. This is a medallic issue, souvenir of a visit by Napoleon III to the Paris mint. Specimens exist in gold.
