This specimen, from the Paris mint, is from a type struck 1850-51 only during the Second Republic of France. Neither date is common but the mintage of the 1851-A is six times that of the 1850-A. The type is seldom seen, unlike the common twenty francs d'or of 1849-51 (F.529). Le Franc[1] reports that this type often comes weakly struck and appears more worn than it actually is. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One. The second specimen was lot 747 in CGB sale 42 (Paris, January 2010).

Recorded mintage: 591,475[1].

Specification: 3.23 g, 0.900 fine gold, 19 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Louis Merley (1815-83).

Catalog reference: F.504/1, KM 770, Gad-1012, Fr-567.
