Heritage sale 3049, lot 30758

This specimen was lot 30758 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $2,115. The catalog description^[2] noted, "Napoleon III gold 10 Francs 1860-A MS66 NGC, Paris mint, Hand. Essentially pristine with a delectable satin sheen and a boldly impressed strike on both sides. One of the nicest examples we've encountered for the type, and currently the finest certified example of the date by NGC." This product of the Paris mint is a common date of a series struck in France 1855-60. The ten francs d'or is, as a class, much scarcer than the contemporary twenty francs d'or. It is especially rare to find in nice condition. The earliest type, with a 17 mm diameter, was struck 1854-55 only and is very scarce. For the bare head type, 24 million five francs, 61 million ten francs and 146 million twenty francs were struck in gold. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Recorded mintage: 5,985,069 for both privy marks^[1].

Specification: 3.23 g, 0.900 fine gold, 19 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Jean-Jacques Barré (1793-1855).
