This specimen was lot 73113 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 10 Francs, 1859-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Napoleon III. NGC MS-61. Mintage: 2,279. A low mintage example, this sparkling Mint State specimen delivers wholesome details and a soft cartwheeling luster throughout. A tremendous example for any specialist in the series." This product of the Strasbourg mint is a slightly better date of a series struck in France 1855-60. The ten francs d'or is, as a class, much scarcer than the contemporary twenty francs d'or. It is especially rare to find in nice condition. The earliest type, with a 17 mm diameter, was struck 1854-55 only and is very scarce. For the bare head type, 24 million five francs, 61 million ten francs and 146 million twenty francs were struck in gold. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate after World War One.

Specification: 3.23 g, 0.900 fine gold, 19 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Jean-Jacques Barré (1793-1855).
