Jean Elsen sale 137, lot 1083

This specimen was lot 1083 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it sold for €64 (about US$89 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 5 francs, 1859A, Paris. Très Beau. (empire of France, Napoleon III, 1852-70, gold five francs of 1859, Paris mint. Very fine.)"

This denomination was introduced in 1854 at 14 mm diameter and a plain edge. Later in 1854, the design was revised to add a reeded edge and in 1855 the diameter was increased to 17 mm. Gold five francs were struck until 1868.

Recorded mintage: 5,741,592, the most common date along with 1857-A.

Specification: 1.61 g, 0.900 fine gold, 17 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Jacques-Jean Barré.
