Jean Elsen sale 145, lot 1345

This specimen was lot 1345 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €180 (about US$257 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 5 francs, 1858A, Paris. Superbe. (empire of France, Napoleon III, 1852-70, gold five francs of 1858, Paris mint. Extremely Fine.)"

This denomination was introduced in 1854 at 14 mm diameter and a plain edge. Later in 1854, the design was revised to add a reeded edge and in 1855 the diameter was increased to 17 mm. Gold five francs were struck until 1868.

Recorded mintage: 2,981,761, slightly scarce.

Specification: 1.61 g, 0.900 fine gold, .0467 troy oz AGW, 17 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Albert Désiré Barré (1818-1878).
