This specimen was lot 20563 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Napoleon III gold 50 Francs 1858-A, MS62 NGC, very sharp with soft toning and full mint luster." This type was struck 1855-59 in France at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the forty francs of Louis Philippe. It is not rare and most specimens trade for their bullion value. This is a common date.
Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, designed by Jean-Jacques Barré (1793-1855).
