The first specimen was lot 20912 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Napoleon III gold 50 Francs 1859BB, MS63 NGC, exceptionally nice with satiny surfaces and strong eye appeal." This type was struck 1855-59 in France at Paris and Strasbourg, superseding the forty francs of Louis Philippe. It is not rare and most specimens trade for their bullion value. This is a slightly scarce date.

Specification: 16.13 g, 0.900 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, designed by Jean-Jacques Barré (1793-1855).

Recorded Mintage: 61,534[1].

Catalog reference: Gad-1111, Schl. 270, Fr-571; F.547/8, KM 785.2.
