France 1859-A 20 francs
This specimen was lot 3129 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €240 (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KÖNIGREICH Napoléon III, 1852-1870. 20 Francs 1859, A, Paris. 5,81 g Feingold. In US-Plastikholder der PCGS mit der Bewertung MS 62. GOLD. Vorzüglich +. (empire of France, Napoleon III, 1852-70, twenty francs of 1859, Paris mint, PCGS MS-62, extremely fine or better.)"
This type is one of the most common gold coins in existence (146 million minted 1853-60) yet it is very difficult to assemble a set in choice condition.
Recorded mintage: 20,163,578 (highest mintage date of any gold twenty francs).
Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Jacques-Jean Barre (1793-1855).
