Sincona sale 69, lot 501

This specimen was lot 501 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 120 CHF (about US$159 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH. II. Kaiserreich. Napoleon III. 1852-1870. 5 Francs 1859 BB, Strasbourg. Sehr schön. (France, second empire, Napoleon III, 1852-70, gold five francs of 1859, Strasbourg mint. Very fine.)"

This denomination was introduced in 1854 at 14 mm diameter and a plain edge. Later in 1854, the design was revised to add a reeded edge and in 1855 the diameter was increased to 17 mm. Gold five francs were struck until 1868.

Recorded mintage: 2,279,277[2], a slightly better date.

Specification: 1.61 g, 0.900 fine gold, 17 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Jacques-Jean Barré; this specimen 1.60 g.
