Eliasberg lot 165
France 1858A 100 francs rev Eliasberg 165.jpg

This specimen was lot 165 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted, "1858 (A) 100 francs. Paris mint. MS-65 (NGC). Types as above. Bright yellow gold with frosty surfaces and heavy lustre. Exceptional eye appeal. An extraordinary specimen of the type. From Henry Christensen's sale of the Lipno Collection, November 1961, Lot 235." Eight dates comprise a set of this type, which was struck 1855-59. Despite the short run, this is the commonest of the three types of large gold 100 francs, and XF-AU specimens can be had for little over their bullion value.

Recorded mintage: 91,945 (second commonest date).

Specification: 32.26 g, 0.900 fine gold, 35 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Jean-Jacques Barré (1793-1855); this specimen: 32.27 grams, 34.80 mm.

Catalog reference: Fr-569, Gadoury-262, KM 786.1, F.550/5.
