from the Stack's Bowers 2024 ANA sale, lot 43199
SB824-43199r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43199 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE. National Convention. Silver 1/2 Écu de 3 Livres Module Essai (Pattern), 1792. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-55. Plain edge. By A. Dupré. Diameter: 36mm. Some light rub across the high points along with a subtle rim bruise account for the overall grade, with this elegant proposed minor nevertheless featuring a deeper gray tone and accentuated devices. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Münzen und Medaillen in Basel on 5 February 1977)."

Altho dated 1792, we surmised this was made later, most likely in 1793. The republic was declared in September 1792 but the king's bust was not removed from the coinage until after his trial and execution in January 1793. Other half écus exist, including the 1792-A demi-écu au buste habillé and the 1792-A demi-écu constitutionnel, so we are calling this specimen a three livres to distinguish it.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Maz-333 (R3); Gad-44; Guilloteau-345.
